Dr. Deepak B. Phatak graduated in electrical engineering from Indore and then completed his M. Tech. and Ph. D. in computer science. He has been with IIT Bombay since 1971. He has served in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and was the department head from 1991-94. He also served as the first Dean of Resource Development for IITB from 1995-98. He was the founding head of the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology (KReSIT) which was set up in 1998 at IITB. He was appointed to the Subrao Nilekani Chair in January 2000. He also headed the S J Mehta School of Management from July 2004 to June 2005.

His research interests are in the areas of data bases and information systems, software engineering, system performance evaluation, IT enabled education and IT strategy planning. His primary research inclinations are in technology application and deployment.

Under his guidance, two unique programs were initiated and developed at the Institute. One was in the form of an IT business incubator while the other offered live courses through a distance education program using VSATs. Both these initiatives have now matured as regular activities in their respective spheres through the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), and the Centre for Distance Engineering Education Program (CDEEP).

In 2002 Dr. Phatak took a sabbatical leave and went around the country giving talks to Engineering College, students & teachers. This interaction helped him to understand the problems faced by talented people in Indian Education System. In response he set up the Ekalavya Project as a collaborative open source knowledge initiative, and Affordable Solutions Lab for R&D of innovative technologies, applications frameworks and appliances, to be released in open source.

He has been a consultant and advisor for IT related issues to many organizations such as State Bank of India, Reserve Bank of India, Unit Trust of India, Industrial Credit & Investment Corporation of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, New India Assurance, United India Insurance company, etc. He works on several committees advising Government departments on issues related to IT strategy planning and deployment, and various e-governance projects. Dr. Phatak has served on several company boards in the past, and is currently on the boards of HDFC Asset Management Company, Dataquest, a primiere IT publication, recently honored him with a "Lifetime achievement award", National Institute of Bank Management, Institute for Banking Personnel Selection, and National Insurance Academy.

Dr. Phatak's dream is to see a resurgent India catching up with the world using IT as the springboard. He hopes to make IT work for the millions of Indians so as to enable them to lead an honorable, comfortable and peaceful life full of love and harmony.

He is a fellow of CSI, and of IETE. He continues to work on many Government, AICTE and NASSCOM Committees.
