Lowell Campbell

Currently a Global Product Specialist for Digital Financial Services and Alternative Delivery for the IFC, where I joined from my previous position as Head of Agent Banking for Africa for Standard Bank the largest bank in Africa. This led to extensive work on the African continent including being involved in a bank led mobile money rollout in Nigeria that was voted the most innovative mobile banking solution in that country. Prior to this I was the Managing Director of Pesatransact in Kenya. I established a low cost network of around 1400 stationary Agents across Kenya. I have spent many years working in and travelling through Africa, looking at private equity and venture capital transactions. I have extensive banking experience through positions held in South African banks as well as being the Vice President for Cape Operations for the State bank of India. In terms of Branchless Banking and the understanding thereof, it is my Kenya and Nigeria experience that has culminated in a wealth of knowledge. This knowledge has been gained by personally travelling the length and breadth of Kenya acquiring agents, supporting those agents and growing the network. This has given me a keen understanding of implementation at a grass roots level and an intimate understanding of what makes agents and consumers buy into a product or service and what factors impact on traction. This together with a formal banking back ground lends itself to a very clear understanding of how to bridge formal banking and the informal entrepreneurial agent environment in Africa. Lowell was also awarded the Standard Bank Africa award for Innovation.

The last year has seen me interacting with and providing advisory to a number of clients in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka (private sector and G2P), Africa and China.
